Ever since I was an art kid in high school in the 80's and I saw for my first time the editorial images captured by Bruce Weber, Herb Ritts, et al., I was enamored and inspired by their photographic treatment of the human body as it related to our then less frightening interpretation of the ideal than the ill-guided infatuation with the waif, gaunt figure that followed. Fueled by exposure to these images coupled with my love and admiration for Greek sculpture, I bit into the apple and believed I too could look like that. So began my pursuit of the superficial. You see, I had always hoped from that day forward I could be one of the guys in those images, but try as I may have, life was never in the right place at the right time for me, so to say the least, I have only been able to live vicariously through my deep seated, exhibitionist alter ego not unlike that of Ben Stiller's Zoolander. And that's okay, because as youthful masculinity is gracefully replaced with ageful wisdom and the barbell a camera, so too is the hope of one day being the cool dude in front of the camera replaced with the hope of one day being the cool dude behind it. It is this as well as my appreciation for the beauty of the human physicality and spirit that drives the rationale of my own work as a photographer. And as for the superficiality of it all, well, I happily invite you up to the surface with me. After all, it is our awareness and acknowledgement of the beautiful things in life that inspire us to cultivate our own beauty from within. Hopefully you will find such inspiration from these images as I did from others all those years ago.
